CASTELLI
Castelli is an Italian brand of cycling clothing. The origins of Castelli clothing date back to 1876, when Milanese tailor Gian Vittore made clothes for AC Milan, Juventus and the Milanese ballet corps. In the early 20th century, customers included Alfredo Binda, a multiple Giro d'Italia winner. In 1935 a young Armando Castelli joined Gianni Vittore's staff and, a few years later, took over the business, maintaining a high-profile clientele, including Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi. Over time several other professionals began wearing Castelli clothing, including Louison Bobet, Raphael Gimignani, RikVan Looy, Jacques Anquetil and several other teams.
In 1974 Castelli was born, founded by Maurizio Castelli, Armando's son. Maurizio grew up with clothes made by Gianni Vittore, but in time he decided to found a company that was more innovative than his father's. It was Maurizio who introduced the Castelli brand to the market in 1974. It was Maurizio himself who in 1979 introduced shorts in Lycra, an extremely elastic and comfortable fabric, to the market. The same year he won the Discobolo d'Oro award from the Corriere dello Sport, for revolutionising the way cyclists dress. In 1981 Maurizio introduced the first coloured shorts for cyclists, while in 1983 he created the first windproof jerseys with graphic and sponsor images printed directly onto the fabrics. The novelties didn't end there, in fact, the following year the first thermal clothing signed Castelli was worn by the athlete Francesco Moser at Paris Roubaix. Over the years Castelli began to supply the jerseys of the leaders for both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France, as well as several teams.
In 1995 Maurizio Castelli died suddenly of a heart attack while cycling on the Cipressa, a section of the Milano - San Remo. Castelli's innovative spirit did not stop and in 1996, at the Atlanta Olympics, he introduced the first aerodynamic leotard, worn by cyclist Paola Pezzo, who won the gold medal in the mountain bike event. In 1998 Castelli introduced the first jersey with breathable treatment, called Prosecco, and the anatomical Progetto Y pad.
In 2007 Castelli revolutionized Team Saunier Duval's clothing, with even lighter jerseys, and by introducing the elastic band for the shorts instead of an uncomfortable and tight elastic. He would later reinvent the shorts again, making them with a single piece of fabric and integrated seamless components. In 2008 he introduced clothing with a radiating insulation system, called Radiation, to the market.
In 2010 Castelli achieved another first, bringing nanotechnology to cycling with the NanoFlex repellent fabric. The Cervelo - Test Team also tried Castelli's garments and became their customers from then on.
In 2011, athlete Johan Van Summeren won Paris Roubais wearing the Castelli Sanremo Speed Suit, created exclusively for road racing.
