Brake pads

The bike brake pads, despite being small in size, play a role of primary importance in braking and, for this reason, need adequate maintenance.

There are two types of bike brake pads: those made up of a single piece, which must be unscrewed, and those with a cartridge, over which it is possible to insert the rubber part by pressing it into the support, or by pulling it out.

The pads must be properly aligned and must be close to the rim. Incorrect alignment of the pads will result in poor performance and can lead to vibration and squealing under braking.

The pads should always be cleaned because small particles of dirt that stick to the pad during braking can make it abrasive and ruin the rims. 

When the pad is worn, it usually lines up downward or upward and has a kind of fin that, in the worst case, can get stuck in the rim and completely block the brake. Wear and tear on brake pads is extremely variable, which is why they should be kept under constant review.

The grooves are invaluable in understanding wear: when they start to disappear, it's time to replace the pads. Replacement usually occurs when the pads are so worn to the point that the metal pad holders are too close to the rim.
