Brakes
Those who practice cycling on the road know very well that, both during competitions and while pedaling downhill, very high speeds are reached and that in order to prevent injuries it is fundamental to have all the safety devices such as brakes and helmet perfectly working.
Brakes must be properly mounted on the bike and must also be constantly checked in order to avoid bad surprises.
The shape of the racing bike brake varies according to its location: brakes for the front wheel have in fact a different size, position and shape than those for the rear wheel. Besides this basic difference, brakes for racing bikes vary according to the braking mechanism and are divided into:
Cantilever brakes: they can be fitted both at the front and at the rear and consist of two levers connected by a control cable. The wheel is blocked thanks to the pressure of the pads acting on the surface of the rim. These brakes are practical and economical but they must be kept constantly clean as, because of the continuous rubbing against the wheel, they could damage the rim.
Roller brakes: they are the evolution of cantilever brakes as they are similar in shape but they do not have a split control cable. They have the same advantages and disadvantages of cantilever brakes and therefore they are not suitable for the most performing racing bike models.
V brakes: they are also an evolution of the Cantilever system and are composed of a caliper with pins independent from the fork and a cable that exerts a traction in the horizontal direction, thus ensuring high power during braking in any situation. Disc brakes: they brake decisively in a short time and allow you to modulate, in an almost millesimal way, the braking with a single touch of the hand.
Disc brakes for racing bikes are divided, in turn, into mechanical and hydraulic: the mechanical ones have a caliper and are operated by means of a stainless steel wire that activates the levers, while the hydraulic ones have tubes containing a mineral hydraulic oil. When braking, pressure is exerted on the oil which then pushes on the hydraulic pistons, bringing the pads closer to the wheel and thus stopping its movement.
On Pro-M Store you can find a wide range of brakes for racing bikes. To know all the products available visit this section or come and visit us in our stores in Milan and Bergamo. We are waiting for you.
