MTB diks brakes
There are various types of MTB brake discs, made with different materials and different sizes, designed for all types of bikes currently on the market.
MTB disc brakes are now widespread and are slowly replacing traditional braking systems as they offer greater safety, stability and the possibility of progressive braking.
But how do mtb disc brakes work and how are they made?
Most mtb disc brakes are hydraulic, i.e. they have an oil, synthetic or mineral, which, passing through the metal cables from the brake lever to the pistons, allows the pistons to apply pressure on the mounted disc (also called rotor) on the wheel hub and stop the ride.
The bike disc brakes are drilled because they must be light and take up little space inside the wheel and must allow the pads to function properly and keep themselves clean, preventing the deposit of mud, debris and dust.
There are numerous diameters of mtb brake discs: the dimensions range from 140 to 203mm and each type is obviously suitable for a type of MTB discipline.
The larger the dimensions, the greater the performance because the brakes overheat less. The size of the bike disc brake must be chosen based on your weight, the structure of the bike and the size of the wheels.
The mtb discs are perforated rims of various sizes and can be in two pieces or monobloc. In the monobloc ones, the spider (i.e. the internal structure) and the braking track (i.e. the outer rim) are made in one piece. The two-piece ones, on the other hand, have a separate braking track and spider; they can be made of different materials and are joined together by the pawls.
The monobloc discs are called fixed because the track and the spider are joined. The disks divided into two pieces are called floating because the spider moves inside. This characteristic, with the same materials used, allows greater resistance to stress compared to hard disks.
There are also semi-floating discs where the internal spider has very limited range of movement or can be moved in one direction only.
MTB disc brakes are generally made of steel as it is a weatherproof material and suitable for prolonged use.
There are also carbon models, light and performing, and titanium (especially the monobloc ones).
If you decide to change the brake discs, you should also buy the pads so that they can be consumed together. To find out if you need to buy organic or synthetic pads you need to consult the technical specifications provided by the brake manufacturer.
The discs must be compatible with the brake system mounted on the bike and the oil bleeding system must always be perfectly maintained since if the air enters the discs do not work correctly compromising braking.
