COLNAGO

The History of the Colnago Brand

Colnago is one of the most iconic names in the world of cycling, a symbol of Italian craftsmanship, technical innovation, and sporting tradition. Founded by Ernesto Colnago in 1954 in Cambiago, a small town near Milan, the company has had a tremendous impact on the history of road bikes and has worked with some of the greatest legends of the sport.

The Origins

Ernesto Colnago began his career in the cycling world as a mechanic apprentice at the age of 13. After working for Gloria, a major bicycle manufacturer at the time, he opened his own workshop in Cambiago in 1954. Colnago quickly stood out for the quality of his welding and his ability to create custom frames for professional cyclists.

Success in the 1960s and 70s

Colnago quickly became one of the most sought-after brands in the peloton. His collaboration with legendary cyclist Eddy Merckx was pivotal: in 1972, Ernesto built the bike that Merckx used to set the Hour Record. This event significantly boosted the brand's reputation.

In the 1970s, Colnago introduced new technologies and lighter frame materials, along with more aggressive geometry. The logo with the famous ace of clubs became a symbol of class and exclusivity.

Innovation in the 1980s and 90s

Colnago was among the first to experiment with carbon fiber, working with Ferrari Engineering to develop ultra-light and aerodynamic bikes. This led to the creation of models like the Colnago C40, one of the first carbon racing bikes to win a major classic and no less than five Tour de France victories with Team Mapei.

Meticulous attention to detail and Italian design made Colnago a premium choice on the global market, with a steadily growing reputation for excellence.

Colnago in the New Millennium

In the 2000s, Colnago continued to innovate, introducing new models such as the C series (C50, C59, C60, C64), and later the groundbreaking C68, a modular frame built using cutting-edge technology. The company remained committed to producing its flagship models in Italy, staying true to its “Made in Italy” philosophy.

In 2020, the brand was acquired by UAE-based Chimera Investments with the goal of expanding Colnago’s international presence and investing further in research and development — all while preserving the brand’s artisanal soul.

Today

Today, Colnago remains a symbol of excellence in road cycling. From handmade Italian frames to modern solutions for aerodynamics, electronics, and full integration, the brand continues to strike the perfect balance between tradition and innovation. Colnago bikes are chosen by professionals, collectors, and enthusiasts around the world for their performance, elegance, and legendary heritage.

With over 70 years of experience, Colnago remains one of the most prestigious names in cycling, blending passion, technology, and art in every bicycle that carries the ace of clubs.
