Michelin
Michelin is a French brand founded in 1889 by the brothers Édouard and André Michelin, who specialised in the production and sale of tyres, initially on bicycle tyres and later on car tyres.
A few years later, the Michelin brothers patented a detachable tyre. At the time, it took at least three hours to repair a canvas tyre, whereas, thanks to the detachable tyre, the Michelin brothers were able to repair it in just fifteen minutes.
In 1895, they took part in the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris motor race with a car equipped with detachable, air-filled tyres, the L'Éclair. The success of these tyres was immediate and within ten years, Michelin tyres were spreading all over the world. Factories were built in England and Germany and, in 1907, in the United States.
During these years, "Dora", the first Italian plant, was also established in Turin. This was the beginning of the production of Bibendum branded products (better known as the Michelin Man, made from tyres) in Italy. In 1927 another plant opened, this time in Trento, which reached its peak expansion at the beginning of the 1970s. In 1961, due to the availability of labour and water, another production centre was built in Cuneo. In 1970 and 1971, further production centres were opened in Piedmont, including one in Turin Stura. In 1997, the Dora plant was definitively closed, and in 2005, those in Trento.
Today Michelin is the world market leader, with around seventy plants exporting tyres to 170 countries. The company's objective is to contribute to the progress of innovation and sustainable mobility, while protecting the environment.
