Ortlieb is a German brand founded in 1982 in Nuremberg by Hartmut Ortileb. The company has always been involved in the production of waterproof bikepacking bags. The idea of †‹†‹making waterproof bags came to Harmut Ortileb in 1981 during a bike trip in England: torrential rain flowed continuously over the English hills and all of Harmut's clothes and sleeping bags got wet daily. One day the young Ortileb saw a truck go by and watched the torrential rain pour down on the tarpaulin, leaving the internal load completely dry. This experience marked the birth of Ortileb waterproof bicycle bags. After returning home, the young Ortileb sewed a bag using a red truck cloth and with a piece of belt he fastened the cover while with a construction hook he blocked everything on the luggage rack of his bike. One for the handlebar was immediately produced for the rear wheel bag and the production request, thanks to word of mouth, soon exceeded the possibilities of a single person. In 1982 the Ortileb brand was therefore officially born. In this period the company began to experiment with the first welds in place of the seams (which were still permeable) and, from that moment, Ortileb bags became 100% waterproof. The bags also began to be equipped with the "roll closure": a simple but effective system to guarantee waterproofing both in the rain and even in immersion. The hooks for the building no longer met the needs of consumers and were replaced with the first Quick-Lock 1 self-locking fixing system. In the mid-90s, the company launched the first waterproof backpack with an ergonomic carrying system, "Packman". Ortileb is now synonymous with waterproof bikepacking bags. Many are the people who in their adventures, by bike, on foot or by motorbike use Ortileb bags. Characteristic of Ortileb products are the hermetic closure systems such as the roll closure, the watertight zip, the hook and loop fastener or the pressure zipper. Many features are patented and always set new standards in the bicycle and outdoor market.
