The Caledonia doesn’t fit perfectly into any specific category, and that’s exactly why we like it. It was conceived during our Thursday evening rides—routes that often have little to do with "road rides" in the traditional sense. When we tried to fit larger tires on our R5 and stiffen our Aspero, a new type of bike was born.
When we design a bike, we start with our library of tube shapes. These shapes are tubes we’ve already used in other models and know their various qualities— aerodynamics, rigidity, ultra-lightweight, etc. They help us quickly perfect a bike. For the Caledonia, we wanted a balance of durability, lightness, and aerodynamics and chose a package that meets the performance needs of this type of road bike.
The Caledonia uses a standard round handlebar, stem, and seatpost, allowing cyclists the possibility to build their ideal bike without compromises. Integrated accessory mounts and hidden fender mounts preserve the bike's sleek lines, so even in heavy rain, with lights and computers mounted, you can still look sharp. Because we all know that if it looks fast, it probably is.
Instead of designing different versions of the bike with different positioning profiles (R5, R series, etc.) as we’ve done in the past, we developed a system that allows for a wide range of positions on a single bike while maintaining the aesthetic and functional cleanliness we require. Modern road cyclists are looking for bikes that tackle long distances, offer high speeds, have no limits, and ensure maximum fun. Using lower modulus carbon fiber in key areas to mitigate the brittleness of high modulus fibers, the Caledonia delivers performance, comfort, and speed. Oh, and it’s compatible with 34mm tires. Or 31mm with fenders.
