The Santa Cruz Tallboy Carbon C S with 120mm travel takes another step forward in what short-travel bikes are truly capable of. If ever there was a gravity riders’ XC bike, the Tallboy is it.

With a fantastic lower-link VPP suspension, a streamlined design, the typical Santa Cruz refinement, and rather radical geometry, the Tallboy is back to being a genre-bending folk hero.

Sure, 10mm more travel may seem like just a small step, but combined with the lower-link driven VPP suspension design, this is a giant leap for the Tallboy.

It’s the kind of bike that makes you sprint while climbing, riding, crossing, or descending, thanks to the maximum efficiency of the VPP design and its responsive, lightweight chassis. But because it shares the same engineering principles as our long-travel bikes, the progressive lower-link mounted shock feels equally at home in cross-country as it does in extreme-country. Paired with a 130mm fork, the Tallboy becomes even more appealing to riders who love pushing their limits.

Conventional theory suggests that shorter-travel bikes are ridden more slowly and therefore require steeper and more conservative geometries. In reality, though, when was the last time you slowed down on a fun trail just because you weren’t on a bigger bike? No caution, just full adrenaline. So we did the same here, mimicking the geometry of our longer-travel bikes to create a bike with a 65.5-degree head angle, a generous front center, and a short offset fork—something rarely seen on a bike of this type.

The radical thinking doesn’t stop there. The Tallboy’s 436mm chainstays ensure that the bike remains nimble in every situation. Pair this with a relatively low BB (335mm and a 37.5mm drop), and you have a combination that’s ready to dive into every corner and launch out the other side.
