The new Santa Cruz Tallboy C XT 29er Mountain Bike with 120 mm of travel takes a step forward in what short-travel bikes are really capable of. With incredible lower-link VPP suspension, a sleek design, Santa Cruz's classic refinement, and rather radical geometry, the Tallboy returns as a genre-defying folk hero.

Sure, 10 mm more travel might seem like a small step, but combined with a lower-link VPP suspension design, this is a giant leap for the Tallboy.

It’s the kind of bike that makes you sprint while going up, along, over, or down thanks to the VPP design's maximum efficiency and the responsive, lightweight chassis. But since it shares the same engineering principles as our long-travel bikes, the progressive lower-link mounted shock feels equally at home in cross-country or extreme-country conditions. Paired with a 130 mm fork, the new Tallboy becomes even more appealing to riders who like to push the limits.

The established theory suggests that shorter-travel bikes are ridden slower, thus requiring steeper and more conservative geometries. In reality, though, when was the last time you slowed down on a fun trail just because you weren’t on a bigger bike? No caution, all thrill. So we’ve done the same here, mimicking our long-travel geometry to create a bike with a 65.5-degree head angle, a generous front center, and a short offset fork, something rarely seen on a bike of this kind.

And the radical thinking doesn’t stop there. The Tallboy’s super-short 430 mm chainstays feature a +/- 10 mm rear axle adjustment to ensure riders of all sizes and styles feel equally at home. Combine that with a relatively low BB (335 mm and a 37.5 mm drop), and you’ve got a combination ready to rip through every corner and launch out the other side.
