The ASR is back. We've never made a lighter full-suspension bike, but that's only half the story. Bring the right suspension to the right mountain bike races. The type of race that requires skill, not just lungs.
The new ASR marks the broadest carbon project we've ever undertaken. It produced the lightest full-suspension bike in our history, updated the design of the flexible stays to meet today's cinematic standards, provided correct setup, deadly small bump sensitivity, insane traction, and 100% usable travel.
Custom blade shapes, critical material choices, smart layup methods, and smooth transitions between each carbon blade eliminated redundant carbon, offering radical strength for super lightweight. Such an ambitious program, based on in-depth carbon analysis tools, represents a breakthrough for Yeti.
We wanted to eliminate carbon redundancy everywhere, not just where it was easy. Our over 20 years of experience with carbon alone told us we could eliminate solid volume at pivot points and still meet cross-country needs without any performance or bearing life disadvantages.
Another goal of the ASR was to design every frame with the same riding characteristics, to give every rider the same feeling, regardless of size. Since the ASR uses single-layer carbon layups to eliminate redundant carbon, each sheet had to be cut precisely. Tedious? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely yes. This way, the specific size could be adjusted at a much more sensitive level, and also accurately match the torsional stiffness and frame flex profiles.
It was the year 2003 and our flexible stay design represented a decade-long approach to full XC suspensions. Today, the embodied ASR considers the relationships between the leverage rate, link sizes, carbon layup material properties, and modern short-travel shocks to provide XC-specific suspensions that are responsive, efficient, and surprisingly lightweight.
Unlike conventional pivot placement methodology for longer travel applications, ASR pivot points are positioned so that existing tube walls make up a significant portion of their shape and structure. To further reduce redundant carbon and save weight.
The ASR features an almost linear progression curve to offer the best balance of efficiency in the middle of the suspension, where XC riders spend most of their time. But with 20% sag, it offers the small bump sensitivity typical of longer travel bikes. Additionally, the last ¼ of travel is designed to increase the ramp, so that stronger hits and aggressive race lines don't throw the bike off course.
