The 160E is Yeti's newest e-mtb. The bike mounts a dedicated suspension specially developed for her called Sixfinity, and it is totally different to what has been seen on the SB66, SB6 and SB150. This brand new suspension is specially designed and tuned to work with an electric motor.
The Sixfinity scheme, patented by Yeti, is a 6-bar linkage whose lower linkage, called the Switch Link, has behavior similar to that of the Switch Infinity. Sixfinity can be adjusted to have behavior appropriate to the weight and speed of an e-Mtb. The structural stiffness then adjusts to the weight and mass of an e-Mtb.
The more the suspension compresses, the more the Switch Link begins to rotate upward to the reversal point where it reverses rotation and rotates downward. The suspension, in the SAG zone, i.e. in pedaling, remains neutral due to a very high and constant level of anti-squat, between 100% and 109%: pedaling does not interfere with the rear suspension as long as the switch-link rotates upward.
At the point of inversion, that is, at about 80-90 mm of travel, which is when you are no longer pedaling, the suspension becomes progressive and behaves like a classic Yeti suspension.
This bike is therefore designed to provide maximum traction and stability while motor assistance is active, that is, while pedaling.
To prevent the action of the rear brake from inhibiting the operation of the suspension. an anti-rise level of 65 percent was adopted on the Sixfinity suspension at about 50-60 mm of travel, i.e., in the Sag zone, which is a lower percentage than on Mtb Yeti bikes. This allows the rear wheel to stay well on the ground at all times and not mess up the geometry of the bike in downhill riding while braking.
You can also vary the suspension linkage ratio: the linkage ratio tells how many mm the shock compresses as the suspension compresses. The ratio varies as the suspension operates.
The bike mounts the Shimano EP8 motor, 160 mm travel, and 29" wheels. The 29" wheels are fast, the wagon is quite short, and thanks to the new suspension scheme it is possible to accommodate the Shimano EP8 motor without keeping the rear wheel too far away. In fact, the wagon measures 44.6 cm, which, with a 29" wheel, is a very good result for an e-Mtb with 160 mm travel.
The battery is semi-integrated, has a capacity of 630wh and is prodoed by Shimano: the battery is hooked to the down tube and protected by a cover: this solution facilitates charging should it be done away from the bike.
Steering angle of 64.5° with the 170 mm fork and offset of 44 mm, seat tube of 78° effective, reach of 460 mm in size M, carriage of 446 mm, bottom bracket height (about) 350 mm on all sizes.
Internal frame cable routing, and if you mount a wireless drivetrain, you can configure the cable routing appropriately. On frames M to XL a bottle cage can be mounted on the down tube.
Kit C1: SLX drivetrain, Fox 38 and Float X suspension, Sram Code R brakes, and 800 mm wide Yeti thermoplastic handlebars.
