The R5 has always had a singular purpose: to reach the summit as quickly as possible. However, a finish line at the end of a long climb is rarely the only ascent of the day. While races are rarely won on descents, they can easily be lost there. A climber’s bike that cannot handle a hairpin turn downhill lacks the punch of a good espresso. This is the fourth generation of the Cervélo R5, and while weight and stiffness have improved over the years, its handling and unmatched agility have remained constant since day one.
The new R5 frame is 130 g lighter than the previous model, a 16% reduction. Additionally, while aerodynamics were not the primary goal for this frame—as they would have been for an S5 or a P5—the integrated cable solution reduced aerodynamic drag by 25 g.
The black color can absorb all light, but the Cervélo Five Black is far from heavy. This ultra-minimal graphic and paint package translates to a significantly lighter frame: you won’t even see it coming.
The R5 is stiff, but not overly so. A perfect mix of handling, stability, and power transfer that feels "just right" and keeps you fresh and ready to tackle the road ahead.
The novelty this year for the R5 models is the Reserve 34|37 TA wheels as standard. TA stands for Turbulent Aero, a new way of thinking about aerodynamics. Reserve and Cervélo developed a protocol to replicate real-world wind conditions in the wind tunnel to develop aerodynamic profile shapes that perform better in everyday use. This means that the wheels are not only lightweight, responsive, and fast but also exceptionally stable and safe in all wind conditions.
The Red and Force versions include Quarq Zero power meters integrated into the crankset. Integrating a power meter results in better stiffness, lighter weight, and greater accuracy compared to aftermarket solutions, with DZero providing precise power measurement to +/- 1.5%, even at variable temperatures.
