Answering this question is very difficult, we must consider many factors: how we would like to ride a bike, our training level, if we take part to any race and if yes of which discipline, how much we are climbing, if we start riding directly on dirt tracks or on road tracks before, how many times per week we would like to go riding, which is our technical background and, most of all, which is the MTB discipline we would like to choose. For example people that would like to choose Downhill will need a full suspended bike with high excursion shock and fork. Enduro bikes is in between DH and Cross Country and even if the bike is still full suspended the frame is less extreme than the DH one, bikes that can always been used to go downhill but can also give you the possibility to climb when necessary. If you are looking for a Cross Country bike the frame will be normally hardtail with front suspension. It is also very important to keep in mind the bike weight, which is fundamental for the racer and less important for the amateur. Finally you must consider the wheel size, a 26 inches is completely different from a 29er and a full suspended bike might be easier to ride than an hardtail but at the same time will be heavier.
